How to Choose Your Perfect Sectional

As we all get ready to hunker down for the fall and winter, many of us are looking for ways to maximize our space and comfort at home.  A sectional is a versatile alternative to a traditional sofa that can suit almost any space with some careful planning and consideration.  They work in large and small spaces, casual or formal rooms, and can add structure to an open floor plan. 

Here are a few tips to consider when choosing the right sectional for your home. 

1. Size:  Proportion is key to good, functional design.  A sectional is a tricky piece to eyeball so you will want to take the time to measure to ensure the size of the sectional suits the room.  Sectionals are often deeper than traditional sofas so making sure you have the space to accommodate the size is important.  You’ll also want to make sure the chaise is long enough if you have taller family members who might want to stretch out their legs. 

1. Shape: This is where the fun starts.  There are plenty of stylish and versatile options when it comes to shape and configurations.  Before choosing a shape, consider the size, layout and traffic flow in your room.  

L-shape: 

An L-shape is a popular style which works well in a corner or floating in a room.  You’ll need to figure out if you want a right- or left-facing sectional depending on the layout of the space.  Generally,  the chaise portion should be on the side of the room with the least amount of foot traffic.  You’ll also want to consider whether the chaise portion will have back cushions for more supportive seating or whether you prefer a bumper chaise for stretching out and lounging.

Curved or U-shape:  

Curved sectionals can make a stylish statement and create a sense of intimacy in larger spaces. They seat more people and allow for plenty of leg room at any angle, making them the perfect option for bigger families or comfortably entertaining a crowd. The curved style works best when placed away from the walls, floating in the room. 

Modular:  A modular style allows you to mix up the configuration to suit your wants and needs.  You can switch the chaise from one end to the other, pull the pieces apart to create a conversation area, or push them all together for a big, cozy spot for watching movie marathons.  

If you need to navigate some tight spaces and doorways to get the sectional into the room, you might consider a modular style which can be moved in smaller pieces.

Fabric:  Choosing the right fabric or upholstery for your sectional can depend on the use and location of the furniture.  Spills are inevitable in high-traffic areas but a stain-repellent performance fabric like Crypton means you don’t have to worry about leaving a permanent mark.  If the sofa is going to get a lot of wear and tear, then outdoor fabrics are extra durable for families with young kids.  A cotton slipcover is easy to throw in your washing machine and an excellent option if you want a white or light colour, or like to change your slipcover with the seasons. 

1. Design:  Sectionals aren’t just great for function, they come in a range of styles to suit any taste. A bench seat, for example, with its minimal lines is best for a sleek, modern look. Higher seats are generally better suited for more formal decor.  Lower styles with plenty of cushions help create a casual, cozy vibe.
